What I did
Eggenberg Brewery and bike tour in a state forest
Still down first [with Don] amongst the group, Peter waiting for his sheep to appear. Brekkie consisted of freshly brewed java and a plate of cheese and meat with bread available. It was fine.
Out thereafter with Don in the drizzle, first to take some shots of the dinner venue of last night. We walked looking for a shop with artwork of CK but could not find it, not for lack of trying. Don't think I made the best footwear choices for this trip: in addition to the dress shoes [fine], my sneakers seem sub-standard re water leakage and I should have brought sandals for around the hotels [and walking around in rainy conditions]
Back to fill time before brewery tour. I c/n get access to my Aeroplan so emailed home to see if the problem was at this end. Arjan came up to the room, hearing a few of my 'hey hey hey' Rose quips.
Off c 1030 for the walk to the brewery, Rose in charge of directions. The art store was readily visible with its doors opened [for a later visit].
We approached from the river. The tour was okay, Jan and Ria asking too many questions, all of which just delayed our beer consumption. Two .5 litres beers were part of the ducat, plenty of time to sober up before the now 1430 bike ride rendevous. Sat with Arjan and Don, making remarks about anyone and everything [including Don and I trying to get down the names of all the group members], Jan getting tired of the women folk so he joined us too, everyone guessing each other's age.
When the other girls left, Ria joined us, suggesting I was 6 years old than I was but the boys each 6 years younger...bitch! Picked up the term 'clusterfuck' from Jan. Our first beer was the weiss or white beer, followed by the dark or smoked beer. The former was better but no great raves by anyone about the local quaff.
Back to the hotel for final bike trip prep. The Aeroplan was now functional though the computer generally has not been 'vite vite'. Still in shorts but put on my Aussie rugby jersey as a concession to the cool air downhill
Only 7 bikers: all the guys plus Ria, Linda and Nathalie [I had guessed 3 gals whereas Don thought 5 and Arjan just 1]. A short walk to Ultava Sport Service to get our helmet. We drove to get the bikes and then headed uphill and out of town to the starting point in the state forest.
The European bikes are different. My bike gears are operated with the R hand but on this bike the major gears were done with the L hand [never touched]; the smaller gears, the R hand. The uphill stretches were okay, the first the hardest. It was not only the steepest but also I was fumbling with the gears. On the downhill sections, I rocketed like a bat out of hell, albeit with more braking than the others probably realized.
There may have been some nice vistas but the focus was on a somewhat wet road surface, wary of patches of wood chips. Our last segment was near the castle and then on to the cobblestones, back to the Ultava Sport Service shop. At whatever speeds people went, the bike ride was good, you four losers showing a distinct lack of intrepid adventure on an Intrepid trip.
Back to the hotel restaurant for a hot chocolate with the boys, certainly richer in taste than the typical fare back home.
Out thereafter to look at the art work of Cesky Krumlov. Don was quite keen to buy but ultimately did not. I bought a small lithograph of the medieval portion of the town 500 CC. Now I have to keep it tidy and unbent. Don will wonder if he should have bought at all while I will wonder if I bought the right one.
Back to the room, Arjan and Don mucking around with playlists while I hit the diary. Don took off for a walkabout. I had a warm up shower and finished the diary so far plus downloaded the pix to minimize later work post-repast. Put on long pants and dress shoes for our final night in CK. Went to the Two Mary's restaurant for a Bohemian feast, having rabbit and partridge with Don, Nathalie, Rose, Peter and Catherine. The rabbit was fine but the partridge was great, its gamey taste the highlight of the meal. Did not especially like the various versions of dumplings. I preferred last night's meal.
Peter suggested meeting Gregor on the first night in Krakow so will pass that along to him. Went to get my rugby jersey and walked most of the palace with the boys. Diary update and blog finished before packing. In bed by 2230.
