The alarm did not go off so startled out of bed at 0745, still getting shower, brekkie and blog update within 45M. Arjan took the group back to the same restaurant [at least for the others it was just a first time experience].

Nathalie and Catherine hung back at Bratislava yesterday, Arjan saying at brekkie they should have told the group. I said she should tell him 'Piss off, Dutchman', something she would never even say in jest.

Reading for travel and downstairs well before 0840, wanting the next stage of the junket to start.
A dumb Japanese couple messed up the rendezvous location so had to head into town to get them. The first half of the journey was on the national highway system, bombing along at 120 kph, sat between Arjan and Nathalie.

Stopped for a break about half way, getting a McDonald's coffee just to try to wake up 1.79 E. Not sure it helped at all.

The second half of the trip was more through smaller villages, some of the more picturesque views one would associate with such places.

At 1153 we passed through the former border with Czechoslavakia: no ceremony, no stopping, a vestige of time and history.

Into Cesky Krumlov ['CK'] by 1240, the charm of the old city immediate. Our hotel is in the old city so it is well situated. It was largely drop the bags and get back outside with Peter to get some Czech crowns, the local currency. The exchange rate was a bit better for the Canuck buck here in contrast to the US dollar so exchanged $300 Cdn for 5,505 crowns, mostly in large bills.

Went to the Krumlovsky Mlyn restaurant for lunch, the local river babbling nearby. The pork belly was not available so had a local goulash which was fine. The Kursovice Musketyr beer was food. Nobody had small bills so I just paid for everything up front 187 CC.

Up to the main square to meet 'Ollie', our local guide. While I caught as much of her talk as I could, picture taking was my primary interest. I had heard before leaving about deaths due to illegal alcohol in the Czech Republic. As of last Friday, all drinks over 20% alcohol were banned: prohibition! St Vitus church along the walk was the best of the lot 100 CC.

We ended up at the outskirts of the castle, some of us heading up for very good views 150 CC. Apparently inclement weather is coming so it was something that had to be done today.

Wandered the castle grounds thereafter with Don. He has a good photographic eye. We eventually ran into others, returning to the hotel briefly for the loo and then going to a riverside bar for an Eggenberg beer, one that I d/n particularly like due to its high yeast level 50 CC.

Back to the hotel to download the day's pix before heading out to dinner, Peter telling us since the weather will now be worse in the morning the bike ride is delayed into the afternoon. The pig's knee was massive, the pork rind component decadent. Tried to make sure I ate as little pure fat as possible. More camaraderie at dinner ie good natured jabs. While large efforts were made by most, nobody probably ate more than half of the entree.

A short walk to the bridge thereafter, a sign in a bar confirming no liquor with more than 20% is available. That put a damper into the idea of a nightcap. Some went out but I returned for the diary and blog c 2130, Don also eschewing more drinking [he says he d/n drink at home]. We were both bad at trying to recall all the names of people, yours truly the worst.

Bed by 2300, hopefully a good night's sleep ahead.

Roddy on

Ah, Krusovice - probably my favourite Czech beer (perhaps in part for its rarity outside CR). Drooling at the mention of it (and it's only 10am!). Try the dark version too, excellent.
