We have visited Waitomo, where we did a spot of black water rafting through the glow worm caves, they are so pretty and very clever creatures. In the light they are about 5 cm brown worm like things with lots of string hanging down (used to catch food) but in the dark its like the nights sky or city lights. They give off a blue light when they burn off their waste materials! The rafting was rather gentle - lots of floating through chilling cave water! Good fun though, despite the silly outfits (but I feel it'll be one of many silly outfits on this trip!)
The next day we went to Rotorua to see all the hot pools and geysers - they were really impressive and the rocks all around were really hot, you just had to ignore the strong sulphur smell, especially as it hung around for a few days in the clothes!
I then did a spot of white water rafting, which was great fun, it was grade 5 (so its a good job i wasn't injured as my insurance doesn't cover me above grade 3!) and we went down a 7m waterfall - the largest commercial water fall you can raft down. It was great fun and as the water was slightly thermally heated it wasn't cold! (but yet another silly outfit!)
In the evening we went to a Maori cultural evening - it was really interesting and a good introduction to the culture, there was a performance, an explanation of the their tools, weapons and games and then a lovely meal - traditionally cooked lamb, and masses of it - yum yum yum yum yum!
