We have spent a few days on the island of Ometepe, which is in lake nicaragua, and is basically 2 volcanos (now inactive).

We deciding to hire bikes so we could ride to a waterfall, though in retrospect that might have been a mistake. After a 15km bike ride (it didnt look that far on the map!) on very rocky unpaved roads with lots of hills we got to the waterfall entrance.  Though we were too hot so had a quick dip in lake nicaragua before starting the 4km uphill hike to the waterfall on very rocky and uneven ground.  During this hike (in about 35īc temperature) I saw lots of butterflies and a wild monkey in the trees.  When we eventually got to the waterfall it was lovely to stand under the cold water.  The water comes from the crater lake on the top of one of the volcanos which they also pipe down for drinking water.  When we eventually climbed back down though we were rather tired, but the temperature had dropped to a more comfortable 30 degrees!

None of us could face the bike ride back (lots of sore legs, bums and hands!) so we phoned the hotel and begged for a van to take us back, which eventually arrived much later (after it suffered a burst tyre on the dodgy roads) and it took an hour to drive back to the hotel.

Needless to say that after a quick cold beer and an ice-cream I collapsed and fell straight to sleep!!
