September 15 - Tuesday

After getting a total of 2 hours sleep, at best, at Big Meadows we got loaded up and "Got the 'heck' out of Dodge" as quickly as possible.  Needless to say we have no plans to stay there ever again.  So, we are on the road again. I must point out here that the Big Meadows area is in the path of the migratory “Flight of the Monarch Butterflies”, and for several miles through this region, almost every tree is filled with the ‘Caterpillar Tents” that will become the beautiful Monarch Butterfly around the end of September.

Back out on the Skyline Drive early, we headed on southward, til we reached the exit to Elkton,VA, where we went for a very delightful and satisfying breakfast at “The Golden Arches”. Bellies full we made our way back to the Skyline drive and continued on our southward trek.

The beauty of nature continued to unfold, with intensity, around each new bend that we traveled.

Also there existed the slightest hint of fall colors appearing all around.

Despite the beauty of nature all around, there was also ample opportunities to ‘cut loose’ and play around the ‘Twisties’ (curves) that the mountain road had to offer…… and play we did …..it was fantastic!.....and slightly dangerous as well. While taking one curve a bit slower due to the sharpness, we ran upon a Wild Turkey…or rather he ran upon us….and run he did just as we began to brake hard to avoid hitting him…….VERY CLOSE CALL INDEED!!

I recommend the Skyline Drive to anyone who would enjoy a generous mix of mountains, beauty and wildlife. It was a good ride!

After a short break to rest our ‘BUTTs’ & legs, we continued on our southward trek into the Blue Ridge Parkway.  The BRP is another very enjoyable ride with its own unique beauty, Twisties, and mountainous region that is ‘second to none’ in the Eastern Mountain Range.

With time to relax, we stopped long enough to enjoy a very serene mid-day picnic on the Parkway.

Back to enjoying our ride, we came across a Christmas Tree Farm as well as more fun ‘Twisties’ and a few tunnels.

All said & done today was a very fun day…we had a blast!!

We ended this day setting up at YOGI BEAR CAMPGROUND in Natural Bridge Station, Va……with time to relax and reflect on the day’s activities.
