Petite Angleterre: la plus british ville de NZ!
Little England: NZ's most British city!

Christchurch est une drôle de petite ville, on dirait qu'elle cherche à être plus anglaise que l'Angleterre! Tout y est fait à la manière de, on pourait vraiment se croire à Oxford ou Cambridge, c'est vraiment drôle. Alors forcément quand je suis arrivé j'étais un peu surpris, je ne savais pas que j'avais changé d'hémisphère soudaiment. :)
Même si c'était drôle de voir ça, c'était un autre aspect de la ville qui m'a attiré. La NZ étant proche de l'Antarctique, Christchurch a été et est toujours la base de départ d'un grand nombre d'expéditions pour ces contrées glaciales. Cela se voit à la fois dans le Canterbury Museum, qui contient même un Sno-Cat au complet, et surtout dans le International Antarctic Centre, où il y a un musée et les bases arrières de nombreux pays.
J'ai donc fait les deux musées, le Canterbury plus orienté vers l'histoire de l'exploration, et contenant de nombreux objets historiques, et le Centre, plus orienté vers les explorations scientifiques récentes. Le Centre est aussi beaucoup plus interactif: par exemple il contient une chambre froide dans laquelle la température de l'air descend à -8°C, puis -25°C avec le facteur vent, mais j'était en petit coupe-vent et vêtements normaux et ça ne m'a pas vraiment perturbé, vive l'entraînement Canadien. :) Cela dit, pas mal de gens autour n'avaient pas l'air très heureux! Mais le plus drôle, c'est le tour en Hagglund. Ce sont les petites machines à chenilles utilisées dans tous les coins enneigés pour se déplacer, ça passe vraiment partout! J'étais à l'avant par chance, j'ai pu prendre une petite vidéo. :)
Je me suis donc bien amusé à Christchurch, la seule chose que je regrette est de ne pas avoir connu à ce moment-là plus de détails de l'histoire des explorations antarctiques. Je suis sûr d'avoir raté des trucs dans les musées par pure ignorance...

Christchurch is a funny little town, it seems that it's trying to be more English than England! Everything is done in the style of, one could believe being in Oxford or Cambridge, it's really funny. So of course when I got there I was a bit surprised, I didn't know I had suddenly changed hemisphere. :)
Even if it was funny to see all of that, I came to this place for something else. NZ being close to Antarctica, Christchurch was and still is the home base for a large number of expeditions heading to those frozen lands. It can be seen in the Canterbury Museum, which even contains a full Sno-Cat, and above all in the International Antarctic Centre, where there is a museum and the support bases of numerous countries.
So I went to the two museums, Canterbury showing the historical expeditions and containing a lot of historical artefacts, and the Centre dealing more with recent scientific exploration. It is also much more interactive: for example it contains a cold room in which the air temperature goes down to -8°C, then to -25°C with the wind factor, but I was in thin windproofs and standard pants and it didn't really bother me, thanks to my Canadian training. :) Quite a lot of people around me didn't seem quite as happy as I was, though... But the most fun was the Hagglund ride. They're funny small tracked machines used to move around where there's a lot of snow, it really goes everywhere! Luckily I was seated in the front, so I could record a small video. :)
So I had quite a lot of fun in Christchurch, the only regret that I have being not having know more at that time of the details of the history of Antarctic exploration. I'm sure I've missed plenty of stuff in the museums because of sheer ignorance...
