We invited everybody for a 16-kilometer walk in the mountains situated approx. 50 kilometers from Klatovy. The mountains are called "Sumava" in Czech or “Böhmerwald” in German (both names are used because the mountains are being shared by two countries – Czech Republic and Germany). Our goal was to climb up the observation tower located on the top of the Noon Mountain (“Polednik” or “Poledni hora” in Czech language)
The Noon Mountain is situated 1 315 meters above the sea level and it´s the fifteenth highest peak of the Czech part of the mountains Sumava. There is the above mentioned observation tower on the top of the Noon Mountain. The observation tower resulted from the original tower of the military premises having a role of an electronic guarding of a border between eastern and western world. These premises were constructed in a very strictly guarded frontier zone in the 60s and 70s of the 20th century. Basically it was supposed to serve as secret military premises since the place couldn´t be even found on the maps. After 1989 the premises were no longer used for military purposes and in 1997 it was made a decision that the observation tower would be reconstructed and made accessible for public (especially Czech and German tourists). The other buildings were torn down so they decided to keep only the observation tower. Today the observation tower has three floors, each of them offering something interesting , for example exhibition reminding some of the equipment used in the guarded frontier zone in the communist era or consequences of the hurricane Kyrril that swept over the mountains Sumava in 2007. The tower is 37 meters tall and everybody must overcome 227 steps to get to its top.
Even if we were considered to be in quite a high altitude it was really hot. After we came back home all of us jumped to the swimming pool and played a few games. Later Gonzalo opened his “Gonzi´s Bar” and started to serve amazing drinks for everybody :) Thus we got a little bit tipsy immediately and had even more fun. What a pleasant day!
