Arrived at the Carlsbad campground, 18 miles north of Carlsbad and very much closer to the town of Artesia. Left Canyon Lake TX at 8am and had a hard 8 hour slog on I 10 west to Fort Stockton, where we turned north through Pecos TX (Judge Roy Bean in the Old West). Crossed into New Mexico at Malaga. West Texas nothing but brown sage and brush, thousands of sq. miles of nothing. Lonely, lonely places. Every town of any size we passed through, though, had its well tended football stadium. Friday Night Lights.
KOA was fine. They sprinklered their dog run and when I got up in the a.m. to let the dogs do their thing, the green grass was frozen. A front was coming through as we arrived - blowing so hard it rocked the van. Tomorrow we cross the mountains to our west through Cloudcroft, and on to Alamogordo.
