Happy happy day!!  After the longest day ever, Wednesday morning we took the ferry to Zanzibar.  This was exciting for oh so many reasons, including:
1)  We didn’t need to get back on the truck for 4 days
2)  We got to stay in hotels and didn’t need to set up camp!!  Along with this, there were 4 days of real toilets!
3)  It is one of my favorite islands of all time, ever.
4)  Beaches!

I have no idea why I love Zanzibar so much and didn’t like Lamu in Kenya…they’re similar in many ways but feel completely different.  The first day we were in Stonetown, which is the capital.  The buildings are all made of stone (perhaps obviously), hundreds of years old, and really picturesque.  We ate dinner at the local fish market, which is one of the most amazing food displays I’ve ever seen.  There are dozens and dozens of vendors set up selling a ton of different local food that they cook in front of you -- any type of fish/seafood kababs, Zanzibar pizzas (like crepes), local veggies with spices, sugarcane juice, and on and on.  It’s excellent people watching in addition to the food…definitely one of the highlights of the trip so far.

Thursday we did a spice tour and then went up north to the beaches, which are almost too good to be true.  White sand, blue water, tiny little bars/restaurants up and down the sand.  We stayed for a couple of days and loved every minute of it.  The only downside was that the area is definitely experiencing the negative effects of a lot of tourist $$s…it’s still amazing, but there was a new set of absurdly greedy/pushy salespeople that hadn’t been there at all in 2006.
