We left Tabatinga late in the afternoon, heading down the Amazon to Manaus. The boat took 4 days to travel to our destination. The only accomadation options on the boat were hammock or stuffy cabins. We opted for hammocks along with most of the other passengers.
The boat was over crowded and there was not much room for our hammocks but as the days went on and the boat stopped along the way the passengers thinned out allowing a little more room to move. All the food was included and quite good. All we could do for the four days was to relax in our hammocks, eat and admire the view, it was brilliant.
We arrived into Manaus the hub of the Brazil section of the Amazon Jungle late in the evening. We spent the night on the boat and in the morning looked around for a place to stay. Manaus is a strange place. Its cut off from the rest of Brazil and can only be accessed by plane or boat. In the middle of town is an enormous Opera Theater built in the late 1800īs during Brazilīs rubber boom. It took 12 years to build and almost all of the materials used were imported from Europe. It was really hot in Manaus and the humidity was near 80 percent so we didnīt hang around. We were able to get a flight to Rio the following morning so we did, and before we knew what was happening we were in Rio de Janeiro .
Rio is an amazing place forget all the bad news of violent crime and robbery. Its a great holiday destination. We managed to find a great hostel on Impenima beach. Right next to Cocacabana. Impenima and the beaches around this area had such a great feel to them, and we couldnīt fault the weather either it was fantastic. We visited Cocavado( The Jesus Statue) for an amazing view over the city and took the cable car up Sugar Loaf Mountain for an even more breath taking view over Rio as the sunset and the city lights started to twinkle. We could only afford to spend 4 days in Rio as its quite expensive by SA standards. We took a 26 hour bus trip South West to the Brazil Argentina border and the amazing Foz de Inguazu(The Inguazu Falls).
The Inguazu falls are the most spectacular falls in the world. They are a collection of over 215 separate falls. We visited the falls from the Brazilian National park which lies on the Eastern side of the falls. A number a walk ways have been built to give you a fantastic view of the falls getting you as close as possible. The Inguazu Falls as best visited from both sides so our next stop was Argentina. Home to the worlds best Beef!!!!!!!!!!! mmmmmmmmmm
