After about 28 hours from the wake-up call in Cairo to the front door in Hibiscusland, we made it home safe and stinky. Can you imagine what three weeks of cat hair on bamboo floors looks like? But, the cats were happy to see us and keep sitting on us every chance they get, as if to say "no more running off to Africa for three weeks!". No worries about that, unless we decide to take our South African safari any time soon.
The previous entries have been updated with a ton of photos, in somewhat chronological order. I recommend that you don't view them with the slideshow option, as the comments that I've attached to some of the photos won't show up. Unfortunately, there were a number of places that we weren't allowed to photograph inside of (damn Frenchies and their flashes ruining it for the rest of us) so I'm going to kick off our "Best Of" list with...
Best Places We Wish We Could Photograph the Inside Of:
1. The Great Pyramid of Cheops.
2. The Catacombs in Alexandria.
3. Any of the Tombs in the Valley of the Kings.
Best Meals:
1. The Birdcage (Thai restaurant in Cairo).
2. Lunch near Saqqara with the best ever grilled lamb and chicken.
3. Room service cheeseburger on Day 17. Needed some American food stat!
Best Lines:
1. "How can I take your money?" - Vendor in any marketplace.
2. "Hello and Welcome to Egypt" - A group of Egyptian school kids with charming British accents.
3. "Ya'lla" - Arabic for "Let's Go", spoken by Mohamed every chance he got.
Best Security Guards:
1. Mr. X.
2. Mr. Y.
3. Mr. Z.
(I really wish I had learned their names)
Best Moment We Could've Done Without:
1. Cheesy lounge keyboard player at Italian restaurant who followed up "Hotel California" with "We Wish You a Merry Christmas". I suppose the Dreidel song would've been out of the question.
Best Photo Ops:
1. Camel driver at the pyramids.
2. Mickey Mouse and the water pipe.
3. Indiana Jones beam of sunlight at the Temple of Horus.
Best Egyptian Moments:
1. Climbing inside the 4000 year old Pyramid of Cheops and Red Pyramid.
2. Retracing Agatha Christie's steps in the Old Cataract.
3. Enjoying the breeze at sunset while cruising down the Nile.
If you couldn't tell from our other entries, we had a fantastic time in Egypt. It's an amazing country with such a rich and deep history. I know that it's daunting, but I recommend to anyone that they cross this country off of their travel to-do list sooner rather than later. You won't be sorry.
