On an early Monday morning, we took the train from Termini station up to La Spezia and then into Riomaggiore. I don't think we expected everything to be as beautiful as it was. (NOTE: we went in October and there were very few tourists in town)
We were able to get an apartment through MarMar and I was so glad that we did instead of a hotel. We walked through the backstreets to get to our forest green door, then up a few flights of narrow stairs and tada! We were there.
It was an actual apartment, the perfect size for the three of us. The kitchen was stocked with plenty pots and pans if we had been adventurous enough to cook. The bathroom was clean and efficient. But the best part was the views. We could see straight out our windows to the sea. It was wonderful! As if it couldn't get any better, we also had access to a roof-top terrace where we could sit and eat all the goodies we had bought in town.
The Bar Centrale is a must for anyone staying in Riomaggiore. The food is wonderful, the atmosphere is great (outdoors on plastic chairs surrounded by people from all over the world) and at night you may get a treat of live music from the guy sitting next to you as he randomly pulls out a guitar and starts singing.
As if life couldn't get any sweeter, next to the Bar Centrale is a shop that sells cookies, chocolates, gelato and in the morning, crepes. Lovely, warm, gooey, luscious crepes. The ham and cheese is to die for as well as the Nutella crepe. Needless to say, most of our tourist euros went to this lovely establishment.
The local grocers were a great place to pick up small things such as Lucca olive oil, local pesto and my favorite breakfast drink, pineapple juice (they don't sell it in the US so it was a real treat).
Riomaggiore was just the perfect stop in our trip to relax and we wished we could have spent our whole trip there.
