Diverse, friendly, hot and humid.
Just a few adjectives to sum up Guam. I stopped there to get my consulate stamped because Guam is under U.S rule. It's a beautiful and relaxing place. I loved it.
Me, my friend Spatz and Mike (another guy journeying to teach in South Korea) got a full day in Guam to swim and bath in the sun. The water was so pure and clear and the sand was WHITE. It was one of the most beautiful places i've been so far, apart from the commercialization, you can still get the beach feel from some of the local restaurants.
The main strip (Joumon or Toumon, little wakiki as the locals call it because the tourists are mainly japanese) is where we spent our day. There were a lot of high-end fashion shops... prada for example. Mike was nice enough to inform me of 'cone shells' which shoot up spear like objects if they feel threatened. I knew nothing of this before as I splashed around buzzed in the water. I saw a gecko too and he unfortunately sacrificed his tail. I also heard a threatening noise that sounded like "two baboons fighting over a carrot" even though their typical diet is bananas Mike. I'm sure it was just a dishwasher or something. Nothing serious and i've never heard of anything harmful in Guam.
We had some beers, were kicked out of the hotel beach bathing area and ventured on to a pub, Stanley's pub that is. Stanley was an interesting australian guy and had the beer coolers accessible to the public. If you wanted a beer or drink, go grab it out of the 'store like' fridge-styler coolers (obviously unsure of the name). But just like at the store. On the front of the menu was Stanley himself beer in one hand and cigar in the other naturally. I also saw hooters, which was hiring and I contemplated not going to South Korea, but knew I had to move on.
We only got to stay one day and it just didn't seem right to eat at an american restaurant on such a tropical island! I love this beach-feel no shoe pubs. On the plane ride back to Japan ( we stopped there first) I slipped on a shell in my sleep. I could tell I was already reminiscing.
