Wow, storms are impressive here. Last night and this morning we had thunder and lightning, and rain that sounded like a pool being upturned for hours on end.
I am pretty much in limbo until the credit card thing gets resolved. As far as I can tell, without money there really isn't much visitors can do, because, even though admission to things like the Apartheid Museum is pretty low – $10 or less – almost everything also requires a vehicle to get to, and taxis are pricey. The only public transportation I've seen so far, out here in the suburbs, consists of packed, unmarked van-type vehicles, whipping up to random corners and spilling out people before whipping off again. If there’s a system to it, I don’t know what it is. Online, there is shown a combination of train and buses that gets you into the center of town and around to the sights, but so far I haven’t found the train station starting point, or the tourist information center I’ve seen signs for. Both are supposed to be nearby – I think I’ll go looking again today.
In my first post here I mentioned massive birds making sounds I’d never heard before. Well, I’ve figured out what they sound like. They sound like what I’d imagine distressed horn ducks would sound like, if their bills were kazoos.
Yes, this is what my brain does when I’m stuck going nowhere. I need to find that train station!
Updates:
Found the train station. However, the train/bus combination doesn’t run on the weekends, so I’ll have to visit places downtown in the mornings during the week.
The real bird looks like a horn duck with a kazoo for a bill! It’s a Hadida Ibis. http://mw2.google.com/mw-panoramio/photos/medium/11662404.jpg
