Iasi is one of the larger cities of Romania. We got here on the heels of an adventurous car road trip of about 400km, which took about 8 hours to do, due to the vagaries of driving on Romanian roads. It is prettier than Bucharest and has a certain provincial charm, though it does not feel at all like a small city. Tavi's godparents live here and it was a pleasure to visit them, as they are both very educated and interesting elderly people. It was also quite an experience for Virginia to experience and for Tavi to reexperience life in one of those Communist era appartments, complete with the old 1960s Russian radios as big as a piece of furniture. We had a good time here and we marvelled at the kindness and generosity of people who were treated quite harshly by life.
