That was a very dumb thing to do.
First of all, the airport in Jakarta is not lovely or comfortable. I spent a good hour or two trying to arrange my bags on the bench in such a way that I could sleep on them (prevent theft) and have some reasonable level of comfort. Unsuccessful. I ended up flopping on my bag at around 2 am and throwing my towel over me to try to sleep. 6am suddenly arrives and the airport is freakishly packed, loud and bright. There are people everywhere and after sleeping 4 hours on a bench, I hate them all!
I spent the rest of the day wandering around the airport with my house (aka big bag), sitting here and there on the floor, trying to read magazines but really just wanting to sleep. Also I was running low on rupiah and didn't want to change any money since I was about to leave. I only had enough for a bottle of water. Hoo. Ray.
Those were some long hours, but finally it was time to go. Goodbye, Indonesia.
My flight was on Air Asia. If you've ever flown this budget airline, then you know that there is no assigned seating. I did not know this. Basically when they open the gate everyone mobs the entrance so they can get a good seat, whatever that means to them. Quelle disastre (bad French). People are monsters! I think they'd step over their own mother to get that window seat in the evacuation row. Boarding that way was kind of a poetic way to leave Indonesia. Too many people and no where to go.
The flight was a delirious bleary-eyed pain fest. If I ever propose sleeping on an airport floor again, please someone tell me that I am a big, big idiot. I landed in Bangkok in one piece (more on Bangkok next time!), but almost as soon as I checked into my hotel I got a super fun case of food poisioning (or something like it). Curse thee, Jakarta airport!!
