headed off to germany this week to hang out with my friends from uni in australia, rhiannon and alex, who are studying there this year. rhiannon is is karlsruhe, a decent sized town in the south of germany, and alex is a few hours away, in tubingen, a little student town. so i spent a couple of days checking out this bit of germany (the warmer bit!) it was great - it was so good to see friends from australia! :)

on thursday we caught the train down to triburg in the black forest to check out some cuckoo clocks and squirrels. triburg also has germany's highest waterfalls, which were very pretty splashing down in the middle of the beautiful forest setting, but at about 160m high aren't actually all that huge ;) had a wander around triburg, but much to my disappointment did not see any squirrels :( i did however get to eat black forest cake in the black forest, which was great. the most alcoholic cake i have ever tasted in my life - that thing was soaked! mmmmmm, kirsch :)

after triburg we headed to baden baden, a spa town with hot springs. spent an amazing afternoon lazing around in the hot pools outside in the freezing cold air. bikinis in germany in december - unexpected!

when we got back to karlsruhe i had my first taste of german christmas markets. so crowded! but wonderful - in the centre of the town they have set up all these little stalls, all decorated with christmas trees and decorations and selling food and decorations. the whole town appeared to be there, hanging out and drinking hot wine.

on friday we headed to heidleberg to check out the town, its castle and its christmas markets! its such a pretty little town, and the castle is right at the top of a huge great hill overlooking it all. at the christmas markets i got to feed donkies! :)

saturday we were off to visit alex's little town of tubingen, but first we stopped off at esslington to check out more christmas markets (i LOVE christmas markets!) these were the best so far, with a christmas section and a medieval market section, complete with people dressed up and selling armour. crazy germans ;) esslington was so beautiful - the town looks just like you imagine a german town should, and the square where the markets were held is surrounded by these beautiful old colourful buildings.

spent the next day wandering around tubingen, visiting such cultural highlights as alex's local gypsy camp, complete with livestock and cool little train carriage houses :) went into the town centre as well, and had a wander around the castle, where i finally got to see REAL LIVE SQUIRRELS!!! there were two of them, they were red, and SO COOL. i have included photos. its kind of like 'where's wally' though... i'm sure the squirrels are in there somewhere... also saw a bunny. very cool castle ;)

Hi, I will be travelling to Germany Hannover in March 2010 and would be sending a few day in Karlsruhe as well. Is there anyone here that could advise me the best way to go from Hannover to Karlsruhe? Thanks
