this weekend in barcelona has been amazing! having finally found a flat to live in, i have been able to relax, which was just in time for this huge festival called merce. the festival is a celebration of catalan folk cultre, which means that there have been dragons and mythical beasts and giants wandering through the street all weekend, its amazing!

everytime i leave the house i run into another parade, which is fun for me, but slightly frustrating for everyone who is waiting to meet me when i am late for the hundredth time due to unavoidable dragon related delay :)

on saturday i went to see a parade called correfoc, which means 'fire run' and literally, everyone gets dressed up in their best flame retardant clothing and demon outfit and runs through the streets setting of fireworks. the dragons also come back out and breathe fire all over the crowd - lots of singed eyebrows! before the actual correfoc was childrens correfoc, which is kinda like the 9 o'clock fireworks, but with the kids themselves setting of the fireworks - spanish safety standards again ;)

then on sunday we went to see the castellers, who are teams of people who build human towers, up to 8 or 9 levels high. they were amazing to see, especially the tiny child who gets to perch on top of the tower with a crash hat on. one of the towers collapsed, and this kid just went flying, it was insane. but she lived!

everything has settled back down again now, and it is possible to cross the street without being hit by a parade. university starts some time in the next few weeks - we are currently trying to figure out how to enrol, but it is such a bueracratic mess, its ridiculous. hopefully we'll have it figured out in the next 6 months...
