after a brief delay with the EVIL ticket inspector nazis on the budapest underground, i am now in austria. aparently, despite my inability to read hungarian i should have realised that not only did i need a metro ticket for myself, i also needed one for my bag. that was fine, i found this out and bought us both tickets. but the machines that validate the tickets only work for specific lines, so i needed to cross the blue platform to validate my two tickets on the red platform. so the evil woman standing at the bottom of the escalator on the blue platform fined me, despite the fact that i had two bloody tickets and hadn't actually caught the train yet... when i finally had to agree to pay her, she offered me the choice of the fine, or a special 'tourist ticket' for the metro, which coincidentaly where exactly the same price... she didn't seem to get it when i pointed out what an INCREDABLE coincidence this was...

ANYWAY. hungarian railway workers are right up there on my list of least favourite people at the moment. but i finally made it onto my train, and to austria, which after so many weeks of being mistaken for austrain every time i say i am from australia, is pretty cool. i´m just checking out vienna for a couple of days.

spent yesterday wandering around the city just checking things out. i went to the coolest church crypt - in the 1600s and 1700s they used the crypt for burials, but instead of actually burying, just left the coffins out in the open air. but the conditions in the crypt meant that the bodies ended up being mummified, and so now you can see them, quite well preserved, and with their clothes and shoes and even fancy wigs still intact. again, very much my kinda thing :)

when we got back the hostel some americans told us that steve irwin had been killed, so we had to have a drink for him. although trying to explain to the german speaking bar staff that a toast should be called because some guy who restles crocodiles had been killed by a stingray was tricky (bar staff: stingray? what is a sting-ray...? us: umm... kinda like this big flat fish with a poisonous stinging tail... bar staff: yeah sure...)

today i spent the whole day hanging out with the lippizaner horses at the spanish riding school, which was totally cool. they are gorgeous horses - not really traditionally elegant, because they are kinda fat and small, but the stuff they can do is amazing. they jump around on their back legs and leap into the air, they are so cool :) i went to see the training session in the morning, then went on a tour of the stables this afternoon to meet the horses. they´re gorgeous, the vast majority of them are pure white - only 1% are born brown. well, actually, all of them are born brown, but only 1% STAY brown :)

and this afternoon i head to prague!
