i'm not a boat person. i get motion sick if i am in a car, bus or train for more than about 2 hours. i get seasick if i am even in the vicinity of a boat for more than about 5 minutes. so why i decided that catching a ferry from italy to greece was a great idea, i do not know. but it certainly seemed like a good idea at the time.
so to get to the ferry, i had to get up at 6am, so that i could make the 7am train. because it was the only train going to bari, the port i needed. after 4 hours on the train and a 1 hour wait to change trains, i arrived in bari. successfully bought ferry ticket at 1pm, then proceeded to wait for ferry to depart at 8pm. very boring.
got on ferry, and realised that when you buy the cheapest ticket available, and it say 'deck' that means you are paying to spend the next 16 hours of your life sitting on the back deck of the boat next to the swimming pool with a bracing sea breeze cutting through you. this is also where you will be sleeping. on the floor. outside. in the middle of the ocean. niiiiiiiice.
i of course was not standing for this, and promptly snuck inside to hang out with the upper classes. i refuse to be cold wet and seasick. seasick is bad enough.
anyway. so i spent the night under a chair in the seating area - luckily, a combination of seasick pills and ouzo that some friendly greek guy gave me knocked me pretty much unconcious so i wasn't too sick.
and 16 hours later we got to patras in greece. the plan from there was to catch a bus to corinth and then head to a town called nafplio, which is supposed to be very pretty. i managed to get on the right bus (i think) but everything on my ticket was written in greek, so i couldn't understand the name of my stop. so next thing i know the bus turns a corner and there is the acropolis. which meant i was in athens, having missed my stop by about 100kms.
so now i am in athens, about 2 days earlier than i was planning. i took my inability to find the right stop as a sign, so corinth has been canned in favour of going out to some of the islands tomorrow, which i'm looking forward to :)
