i went to the coolest church today. the entire inside is decorated with the bones of the monks who used to live there. theyre called capuchin monks, and it was such a creepy church. even the chandeliers where made out of the monks bones. there were whole monks, still wearing their cassocks, standing up along the walls, or intered in little niches in the walls. and the floor was made of dirt, with wooden crosses in it to mark where other monks had been buried as well. it was totally cool. the ceilings were amazing - sort of french roccoco in bones...

also went to the vatican and waited in the longest line ever (as an added insult, it turned out to be the WRONG line) to see st peters basillica. my line turned out to be for going to the top of the church, which was ok, but really not worth the 2 hours i spent in a line... the church itself was HUGE. the ceilings were amazing, covered in mosaics. it was pretty cool. but my favourite bit was totally to tour groups of nuns that were wandering around. there are so many nuns here, its freaky. but in the church they were in groups, taking photos and getting excited about seeing things, it was cute. then outside, they were eating icecream, just like proper tourists.

turns out my estimate of 10,000 germans was conservative - the official number is 45,000. the pope arrived back in rome yesterday, so that is why they are here. the square outside of st peters was still covered in chairs from his address yesterday. that square is HUGE.
