Our bush flight from Kilimanjaro to Seronera turned out to be an unexpected mini-tour of northern Tanzania. The plane itself looked like it had been designed for about 24 average-sized passengers. However, we quickly learned that a few more could be squeezed in if some were well-mannered kids or the adults were extremely pliable. We ended up making three other stops, on runway surfaces that ranged from red clay to grass, before finally landing at the Seronera airstrip of graded dirt.

Our arrival was observed without acknowledgment by the wildebeest, gazelles, and topis grazing just behind the terminal and on both sides of the runway. We had arrived in the Serengeti. Our first game drive started as we left the airstrip, in what turned out to be a memorable journey accented by unabashed 'wows' and finger-pointing enroute to our mobile camp in the distant hills. By the time we'd rolled up to the tents, we'd already seen hundreds animals, and even a few carcasses in various states of consumption from the day before. It was a fantastic way to start our safari.
