Getting off the plane and walking towards passport control I felt rather dazed. The flight seemed to go past in a flash. One moment I was sitting waiting to get onto the plane, the next I was here with nothing but some dimly remembered films to mark the time.

Countries look so different from the air. England is a rolling patchwork quilt of fields in different shades of yellow, green and brown. Spain is spotty with its many olive tree orchards. Around New York it is surprisingly wooded. Leafy suburbia is just that, there must be at least ten trees to every house.

I felt very excited, despite the jet lag. Getting to my hostel was actually quite fun. I took the bus to Brooklyn, then the metro. I got off the bus a little early and walked along New Lots Avenue. I felt incredibly touristy with my backpack on. I am tempted to rough it up a little, make it look a little less new. I keep on running though all these America films. Everything looks just how I imagined it, from suburban streets to buses and trains. On the bus I kept thinking about Speed and had a vague feeling that Keanu Reeves was going to leap aboard any second.

The hostel I'm staying at is fairly new and slightly trendy. I sat with a few other girls at dinner (free BBQ in the garden). One of them was a Maths and Philosophy student from London. I liked how easy it felt to chat to them.

Breakfast this morning was really good. I ate three jelly and peanut butter sandwiches and some American pancakes for the spirit of the thing. Off to explore now before heading over to long island later. Excited!

No no no! It's a JAM sandwich, not a JELLY one! I refuse to let you become all American-ised... you are official banned from here on in, so there :p

But seriously, glad you got there safe and are having fun. I of course am expecting lots of photos soon :D x

No, seriously it actually is jelly. Like the jelly we get at home (maybe a bit more solid). It is like spreading the packets of jelly cubes you get when you are making jelly on to bread and eating them with peanut butter.
