Described by Aldous Huxley as "the most beautiful lake in the world" and easy to see why. Atiltan is a spectacular, roughly circular lake surrounded by indigenous villages and ringed by volcanoes.
Memorable moments:
- Two happy days walking round its shore watching the water change colour with our height above it and the time of the day.
- Sitting outside the sixteenth century church in Santiago de Atitlan, watching streams of indigenous people in brightly coloured costumes (and stripy trousers) going in for mass.
- Asking the ten-year-old motorboat touts how much it would cost to take us to Chile. 100USD apparently, or 10,000USD to inglaterra.
