A day spent exploring the countryside east of Ludow – we meander through country roads and small towns and villages through to and around Kidderminster, before stopping to visit a private garden, at Stone House Cottage, just east of the city.  Its not huge, especially by comparison with some of the gardens we've seen at the National Trust properties we’ve been to, but it a lovely interpretation of the classic English garden room style and has some wonderfully fanciful brick towers and constructions.  Our route back to Ludlow takes us to Stourport-on-Severn, where the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal joins into the Severn River.  This was such an important transport link during the Industrial Revolution, that Stourport became a major canal boat port, with multiple habour basins and locks linking the canal system and the river.  These are still functioning and today the Stourport Canal Basin, is an active and attractive canal boat  and recreational area – all very interesting!  Our final stop on our day trip, is at Brockhampton Estate – a huge farm, with a wonderful old half timbered farm manor house that dates back nearly 500 years – it even has a moat!!  This lovely old bulding was originally built as the family home for a very wealthy family – and its interesting to see how very basic this house is by our standards – and the not so well off (ie our ancestors!) would have lived in significantly worse conditions.....
