We enjoyed Wales so much yesterday, we plunge back in again – via around-about scenic route that takes us west, halfway across Wales into the Cambrian Mountains, before heading north to the cute little village of Berriew, where we stop for lunch at a lovely old pub, then on to our main objective for the day – Powis Castle (no photos allowed inside sorry!) and its magnificent gardens. The castle stands on a ridge above the valley and the gardens are set out on a series of huge terraces down the steep ridge face and on the flat land below.  The gardens are beautifully kept now, and are particularly notable for the extensive and inspiring borders and the yew hedges and topiary that were let go for several decades in the first half of last century, and are now clipped into fantastic huge organic shapes and massive lumpy hedges (there are photos throughout the garden of how it looked in the early 1900's from  that viewpoint – really interesting contrasts!)
