Another long - and very hot day!  First a nearly 2 hour drive south past Wolverhampton , to visit David Austin Roses  - the base for the famous rose breeder.  Not only do they sell roses from here, but they maintain a series of spectacularly beautiful and inspiring display gardens, obviously showcasing the wide range of English Roses they breed, but also showing them mixed with other plant varieties and in a range of different garden styles.  The garden is very sheltered and ts truly Hot! Hot! Hot! here – however the roses are in peak bloom (infact some of the early once blooming roses are over), and it looks and smells glorious!  We make our was down to a nearby portion of the Shropshire Union canal, for a shady lunch admiring some if the many canal boats (with their very appropriate so-called Roses and Castles traditional painted decorations) moored up and passing by.  Finally we finish the day with a tour around the magnificent stately home of the Earls of Lichfield (last one to live there was Patrick Lichfield – photographer to Royalty and the rich & famous).
