Where I stayed
What can I say, it is stunning here. Fabulous views of the alps, green mountain sides, cows with giant bells and of course swiss chalets. I am staying in the annexe of one of the hotels as it was half the price if I shared a bathroom. However I am the only one in it so I have the bathroom all to myself a fantastic balcony and view of the alps
I caught the upper Gondola up to Bettmerhorn where you can see the Aletsch Glacier a 26km Glaceir that is now a UNESCO site. I am on the opposite side of the alps to Jungfrau(the highest mountain and the Eiger but I am still able to see them). Also to the other side with such fantastic weather I can see all the way to the Matterhorn.
At the top of Bettmerhorn I did a small hike to get a closer look at the glacier however there aren't real tracks as such but rocks and paths and with only sneakers I have to take care. I then came back down to Bettmeralp and wandered through town and picked up some supplies from the supermarket. I decided to have the dinner at the hotel and for 35 swiss francs I got a four course meal. So much better than what I got for my money the other day. However one of the courses was prawn cocktail and I am not exactly sure where they got them from up here!
I woke to a beautiful, crisp and clear morning and headed next door for breakfast which was included in my very cheap price and wow what a breakfast. If I ever come back I am definitely staying here again. It appears to be very quiet midweek with a lot of swiss coming on weekends if the weather is good to do their nordic hiking
As I was going up I gazed into the sky and noticed tonnes of paragliders, it is apparently the place to come and you can even do a tandem. I thought about it but just did not have the time. You can also do rock climbing and they have these suspension wires you can also test yourself on.
Another thing that is popular is heading down the mountain by mountain bike or by mountain scooter. It was terrific seeing 60 years olds hurtling down the mountain on a push scooter.
At the top of Fiescheralp you can then walk,/scramble to the top of the Eiggishorn for a fantastic view. The trail was all rocks, stones and no rail. I am not one for heights but I was going to do this. So by not looking down too much and concentrating so I didn't slip in my sneakers I made it to the top and a fabulous view of the Glacier and surrounding mountains.
I have to say I have really enjoyed my few days here and it is maybe even better than my time at Como. If you are ever thinking of coming to Switzerland Bettmeralp is a great place to visit. There are plenty of chalets to rent, family friendly and of course would be great in summer or winter. I leave here now for Zermatt and a close up look at the Matterhorn
