Flag of Finland  , Southern Finland,
Thursday, June 4, 2009

I flew into Helsinki and went out for dinner at a nice place that served local food at a good price.  I had the reindeer with mashed potatoes (those Scandinavians like their potato!) and lingonberry jam..mmmm!  It was really nice - it was quite a delicate flavour, a bit like lamb!

The next day was 8 degrees and raining, after apparently being 27 degrees on the weekend!  I still saw the sights and had a cheap guided tour at the Natural History Museum, which was really interesting.  There is an ENORMOUS owl that is native to Finland!

4th June was the start of Helsinki Week festival, so in Senate Square there was the Provincial Festival, which this year featured Satakunta province, in the west of Finland.  People from Satakunta were showcasing their food, work opportunities and wares.

The Lutheran Cathedral on Senate Square was quite nice inside, but more plain than many other catholic cathedrals I have seen, which I expected.  There were several statues including one of Luther.  I also went to the Lutheran Church built into rock.  It is quite a nice church, but I was very surprised that they were selling icons at the back of the church.  I enquired, and discovered that Lutherans in Finland worship icons.  Strange!
