Our next stop was to be a small backpackers resort we had heard about which was on the way to Maumere. It was located near a village called Wailamung and the name of the backpackers resort was Woden.

This was a sleepy village but the little resort had a great restaurant which served cold Bintang beer so it was not totally devoid of civilisation.

We were travelling at this stage with Gord & Ginny (Ascension), Bob and Bec (Stardust), Liam and Annie (Gone With The Wind), and Tactical. We stopped for lunch and stayed overnight before moving on in the morning to Maumere which is a main town with airport and was the place where we could get transport for a tour to Mt Kelimutu, famous for its coloured lakes.

We arrived on Aug 17th so Gary, myself, Bob and Bec decided to try and take a bemo (taxi) into the town of Maumere but unfortunately it was a public holiday and no bemos so we settled for a walk anyway. The next day was always going to be a biggie as it was the trip to the mountain which started really early in the morning to get to see the sunrise!

Kelimutu is a volcano, close to the town of Moni in central Flores Island of Indonesia containing three summit crater lakes of varying colors. Tiwu Ata Mbupu (Lake of Old People) is usually blue and is the westernmost of the three lakes. The other two lakes, Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai (Lake of Young Men and Maidens) and Tiwu Ata Polo (Bewitched or Enchanted Lake) are separated by a shared crater wall and are typically green or red in color, respectively. The lake colors do vary on a periodic basis. Subaqueous fumaroles are the probable cause of active upwelling that occurs at the two eastern lakes.

And if you didn't guess it already, I stole the above paragraph off Google Earth! Nevertheless it did a better job of describing the lakes than what I would have done.

From Maumere, we then pushed on to Riung which was the next rally stop.
