Ahhhh, nice to get to the beach. After sweating it out for a few days in and around the Mekong and HCMC, we took a short flight to Phu Quoc Island and stayed there for 3 nights. A VERY nice change of pace from the hustle and bustle of the city and all of those motorcycles!
Phu Quoc is an island in the Gulf of Thailand very close to the Vietnam-Cambodia border. In fact, Cambodia still claims the island as it's own. The island, as of right now, is still fairly undeveloped, but that is changing fast. We heard that Russians have invested over 2 billion dollars on the island....it will change fast! Right now, the ring road that goes around the perimeter of the island is a dirt track, and much of the beaches are empty, and without any development on them. This is quite nice, as we could rent motorcycles for the day, and any time we got hot we could just park on the side of the road and run out into the water at a deserted beach. We stayed at a place called Thousand Stars Resort at the northern tip of the long beach running down the Southern West side of the island (called long beach). The place was filled mostly with Vietnamese tourists, and the entire place looked like some theme park, with statues of all sorts of wild jungle animals, topless mermaids, and scale models of famous buildings such as the Sydney Opera House, and the Petronas Towers in KL. Interesting place. About 5 minutes drive to the north is the main town on the island. At the town is a very cool night market with all sorts of food vendors serving delicious BBQ food for a very good price. We went for baked potatoes, corn on the cob, garlic bread, and chicken skewers every night....tasty!
