So after school on Wednesday, I was invited, along with the Aeckersbergs and Ali, to join Eric go catch some little shrimp at a "stream" near his house. Before we headed out, I asked him how many shrimp we would catch.....he replied "many, many shrimps!".....I asked how many that was...he said "maybe (of course maybe) 1 kilogram"....I asked how long to catch one kilogram, he said "1 hour".....I asked him, how many shrimp in 1 kilogram, he says "many many shrimps!". So anyway. Being a numbers person, I was a little disappointed that I was n't going to get a number out of him, so I resigned myself to the fact that I would just have to wait until we went shrimpin' to find out. Eric picked us up, along with his son Xie Yi Da, aka Lil' Eric, and we rolled out into the depths of Mudu and pulled up to the side of some road seemingly in the middle of an industrial area. Hmm I thought, no rivers around here...we walked over a little knoll that runs along the road, and came across a ditch filled with murky brown water, no more than a meter wide. This is the place? There CAN'T be anything ALIVE in that water can there? Think again Heard. Eric's family was already there, and they had many wood sticks with string tied around the end of them. Attached to the end of the string was a ball of raw pig meat. Eric explained to us that we just need to dangle the meat below the surface of the water and wait for a bite....when you feel the bite, lift the stick out of the water and a little shrimp guy will be attached to the meat....he was right! I think we shrimped for about 45 minutes, and we easily caught at least 75 shrimp. Pretty impressive I think. (Actually, we determined after the fact that they were fresh water crayfish as opposed to shrimp, but same same but different). We had some other locals join us under the sun while we were shrimpin'. It was a very enjoyable afternoon. Here are some pics.
