The Temples of Angkor were the primary reason I originally wanted to come to Siem Reap, like most people. I was actually surprised at how each temple complex had something completely different to offer than the others. After having visited the Mayan ruins at Tikal and Copan last year, I was expecting that it might just end up feeling like more of the same type of deal, but it wasn't like that at all. We visited 5 different areas of Angkor.
First, we enjoyed the sunset from Phnom Bakheng (means Bakheng hill), a pyramid type temple at the top of a hill. Great view. The following morning we woke up to see sunrise at Angkor Wat (means City Temple) which was also quite cool. The sun sets behind the temple so you get a very nice silhouette effect of Angkor.
Next we went to Ta Prohm, which is the temple with all the big Fig and Cotton tree roots growing all over the bricks. Parts of Tomb Raider was filmed here, so Angelina Jolie is quite popular around Siem Reap.
After Ta Prohm we went to another pyramid type place called Ta Keo, which actually did remind me quite a bit of the Mayan ruins.
Finally, we went to the former great city of Angkor Thom (means big city) which includes the Terrace of Elephants and Bayon. Bayon was very cool. It is this temple that has dozens of towers that have these big faces carved into all four sides of each one. Pictures tell the story much better than I do though, so here they are.
