The road out of Munnar was all downhill and flew by at breakneck speed between brief, brake-slamming stops and a few longer ones at bus stations. The combination was body-jarring and resulted in, as in most other developing countries, an average speed of around 30 kilometres per hour.  We passed one bus that had crashed and another broken down, both left abandoned.  Thankfully, ours kept going and five hours later we got off in Ernakulam.

In search of a cool and comfortable place to dine while waiting for the train we chose the Grand Hotel.  We lounged in the lobby for a while, then entered the restaurant when it opened.  It became progressively busier with tourists and tour groups as the night went on.

Almost exactly ten years from the date and time we met in Toronto (EST of course), we hopped on an overnight train bound for the top beach destination in India.  Our side upper berths were in the same coach but well away from each other.  Somehow we both managed to get a decent sleep.  Almost 12 hours later we arrived in Goa.

From the station we decided to splurge on a taxi to the beach.  The driver was lollygagging because our hut was past the main town so we threatened to get out and go with someone else.  He came around, and got paid.
