After an 18 hour journey including a brief stopover in Hong Kong and crossing 12 time zones, we finally touched down in Bangkok on Wednesday, January 11th at around 21:00.  BKK is a HUGE modern airport, used by many as a hub for travels within Asia.

We took the Airport Rail Line followed by the Skytrain; both were modern, clean and efficient.  Despite the late hour (a non-issue in this city), the Skytrain was very busy so we ended up crammed into a corner with our packs.

We then we decided to make our way on foot to our hotel.  Sylvia is the navigator in this pair.  Since there were no discernible street signs, she used two maps and landmarks to find our way.  However, we still had to ask for directions twice to make sure we were on the right track.

Our first hotel was in Sukhumvit near Nana Entertainment Plaza, one of the hotspots for sex tourism in Bangkok, so we had several opportunities to see younger Thai women accompanying older white men, or actively engaged in the negotiation process.  For Sylvia this brought to life a CBC documentary she had seen on this subject which featured a Thai girl whose disappearance was suspected to be related to her work in the trade.  It also makes Sylvia wonder what locals' and foreigners' perceptions are of us being an interracial couple; something she would never think about back home.

The walk was a little longer than expected but the heat was less intense than Jason remembered from his previous visit in 2003.  Still, we were both sweating on arrival at the hotel so the air conditioning was a welcome amenity.

As you will see from the photos below, the room was very open concept, with a giant window between the bedroom and bathroom, complete with rolling blinds.  There was also a kitchen and living area, which we had no use for.  We checked out the bountiful breakfast buffet, then set out to explore the city...
