On the way to Unawatuna our tuktuk driver stopped so Sy could take a photo of the guys fishing on sticks. We knew we would have to pay but the guy wanted rs200 which is about 1 pound for a photo! We managed to get him down to rs150 which is still loads! Our tuktuk driver said we made him very happy which of course we did we gave him rs150 for doing nothing!
What to say about Unawatuna, not much to say because there's not much there. The beach has almost eroded away so the restaurants are right next to the sea so you have to wade through the sea to get from restaurant to restaurant!
We found an odd room to stay in, where it had a 4 poster bed with a block of foam as a mattress and big wooden doors and windows with old fashioned carvings in the. It also had a black and white bathroom decorated in different black and white patterns. Apart from that the rest was quite modern. Outside there was a wooden banister which you couldn't lean on for fear of it falling off! The curtains looked like abstract pineapples and the restaurant downstairs was half finished.
We saw a monitor lizard in the river below our room, it was huge.
We had a really expensive meal (Sy's dish was 5pound alone) but we just needed a good meal as all the food out here is rubbish. We just cant really afford Sri Lanka, all the prices are set for holiday makers not travelers and they all think you have loads of money - our tuktuk driver took us to a hotel which was $40 a night! In Unawatuna it was mainly older people so we only stayed for 3 days.
