While the northern side of the Bretagne peninsula is known for its drab and rainy weather, the southern side is sunny and a few degrees warmer. However, back in the summer of 1980 I rarely went out without a coat: it rained a lot.

We rarely enjoyed a sunny Carnac beach. And that rare occasion would be the time I got lost. I can't remember a beach that was as heavily crowded as Carnac beach. Since I was seven my parents thought I could go jump in the waves and come back on my own after I requested whether I was allowed to. I remember them asking me whether I was sure I could remember their location, and I thought I could.

However, once I got back out of the water, I couldn't find them anymore. A French woman noticed me looking for my parents in panic and near tears. I couldn't speak any French, but "Je m'apelle ..." (My name is). She brought me to the coast guards who called for my parents to pick me up. Meanwhile, the French woman tried to stay with me and soothe me. But I didn't understand any French, and in my fear I suspected she was so nice to me because she wanted to adopt me. As a result I was grumpy  and mean to her, so she wouldn't be keen on adopting me if my parents didn't turn up. Of course they did turn up and thanked the woman for me.
