Golden fields of corn, green lush clusters of pine and aspens, the ocean... it all swooshes by as we fly on by on our train ride between Varberg, Sweden and Copenhagen, Denmark. I feel like a kid, looking out the window tirelessly, just watching the world go by. Swaying from side to side. It is so relaxing and comforting. As we ride over öresundsbron (the longest bridge in the world) the voice on the intercom changes from Swedish to Danish, and just like that, we are in another country.

I bravley start out speaking Swedish and as I I quickly realize that my ear for Danish is pretty darn bad and I have to use my English to save the conversations. Yeah, I know that some of you might think that Scandinavia is one country and that we speak the same language ( which at some point in history was true) but not anymore. We all have our own languages, costumes and very own sense of country ship. You say pølse I say korv kind a thing.

It is hard not to the much more liberal way of Danish living right off the bat; people smile at you as they bask in the late summer sun while enjoying an alcoholic beverage anywhere in public, gay couples stroll Støget showing public affection as well as mothers leaving their children in the strollers outside the stores while shopping. One quickly becomes aware that under no circumstances do you step out in the bike lane without looking both ways, rush hour or not. You will be warned by angry bike bells on all frequencies or simply run over. As a result of the massive bike cascades that can sneak up on you any second, NOBODY ever J-walks on the streets of Copenhagen. It's quite nice.

We check in at a nice little hotel in the Norrebrø quarters. This is the more bohemian part of town where you can buy fresh vegetables from your friendly neighborhood market, shop independent designer clothing, and eat ethnic food accompanied with the seasons latest Tuborg beer brew.

Before we left for this trip we read that Copenhagen is the unofficial capitol of the Scandinavian countries and I am, of course, a bit partial to my hometown Stockholm (also called the Venice of the north). To find out if this statement is true, we set off to explore the city from east to west, from Osterbrø to Vasterbrø. By boat and by foot. We ate the most amazing organic food have numerous amounts of fika (coffee and a treat break) and in between all meals we manage to squeeze in a beer as anytime is a good time for a beer in Denmark. A visit to the social experiment of Christiania was also on the agenda. Christiania is a self-proclaimed autonomous neighbourhood of about 850 residents, covering 34 hectares (85 acres) of the capital. The area has a unique status in that it is regulated by a special
law, the Christiania Law, which basically gave authority over Christiania to the state by
transferring responsibility from the municipality of Copenhagen. This, in effect, gave the residents of Christiania a free reign in self government. It is easy to get lost among the graffiti clad houses dotted out in a labyrinth-like overgrown area. Flower Power and I really mean it. There are cannabis plants growing galore here! Quite a contrast from the otherwise clean and very neat city.

We had a couple of amazing days and my highlight was the sunset boat tour around town. Simply magic. I must admit though, I still think Stockholm is the uncrowned capitol of Scandinavia. Come visit and see for yourself! But make sure you come in the summer....

Hej Micaela and Josh,
I admit Copenhagen is nice! A stroll along STRÖGET is a nice walk through the town, and there are so many nice coffee shops (not like in Amsterdam, they are to be found in Christiania....!). As you know we were married in Denmark and that went well... :)
Hope to be able to see you in Stockholm before you go back home on Sunday!!
