Started for Colombo a bit late in the morning and the way visited a tea factory where we were explained the entire tea making process. Although very interesting the strong aromas of the tea leaves sent me in quite a giddy!! We had lunch with the attached restarunt to the tea factory and enjoyed the good food.
Onward journey to Colombo is quite plain, although would like to mention a road side restaurant spot where you have to climb down the road and amid thick bamboo groves you find the Kelani river. The setting is very peaceful and a must tea-stop.

Reached Colombo late in the afternoon and the first impression of Colombo was that it was a clean and neat city with most of its buildings white washed. Reached our hotel - The Grand Oriental which is an iconic building situated in the heart of Colombo. Although the outside facade was giving the oriental and reminisce of the age gone by, the rooms itself were also of age gone buy. There was musty smell typical of old wood with AC barely working. The bathrooms need refurbishing and overall was a depressing experience. Decided to stay for a night and then move to another hotel next day.
Note: This was the state of the hotel in 2009, they have refurbished and improved over the couple of years.
