Hoping to reach the Napier museum as early as possible, we were ready to depart by 9.00 am, when we were informed by the hotel staff that Kerala's governor M O H Farook passed away during the night due to which public holiday had been declared in the state. The museum was to remained closed and as we couldnt delay any longer, we started on our onward journey to the most famed backwaters of Kerala.
The backwaters of Kerala backwaters are network of interconnected canals, rivers, lakes and inlets forming almost 900 k, of effocient waterways, lying almost parallel to the Arabian sea. The largest of the lakes Vembanada connects Cochin with the southern most parts of the backwaters like Alleppey. We travelled around 150kms distance from Trivandrum to Alleppey by bus (having packed lunch on the way). By 2.00 we were in Alleppey and boarded on a private ferry ride for a 2 hr ride to Nedmudi. Was sceptical of the boat ride right in the afternoon with the sun soarching down on us and also with narrow waterway from where the ride started. However after a few turns, we entered into the bigger canals and then right into the huge Vembanada lake and it was such a bliss.
The afternoon heat was non existant with caressing of the cool fresh winds, the lush greenery on the banks was soothing to the eyes and the vast blue color spread till the horizon was relaxing the body and the mind. Numerous houseboats were floating alongside but without any crowding. It seemed as if life was suddenly running in neutral gear with nothing to rush for, savoring each and every visible nature treats. Saw so many shades of green, from the florescent greens of the rice fields to the deep dark greens of the coconut lagoons. 2 hrs were up in no time and reached Nedmudi on time without getting stuck in traffic jam :-) Another 11/2 hrs bus drive from Nedmudi and we reached our hotel for the night in Kottayam.
The hotel itself was situated on a inland waterway and had beautifully managed its gardens. An idlyllic stroll in the garden witnessing yet another glorious sunset was a perfect ending for a perfectly tranquil day!!
