Memphis is a small town but it is full of soul, music & history.  With the Missisippi River slowly making its way by the city, there is a real distinct feel to the place.

We were staying with another couch surfing host, this time it was Brooks Wolfe that took us into his home.  Brooks is a really cool, laid back guy with a great view of the world.  He has left his coperate job and sold all his posetions, and with the lease due to runout on his flat at the end of the year he is seeing out his time there before heading off on a 5 month hike of the Appalacian Trail.  After that he is not sure exactly where he'll end up, but it will be somewhere that his imapct on the environment is minimal.  It was great spending time with Brooks, and we enjoyed hitting the town with him the first night we arrived.  We had spent the afternoon in the National Civil Rights Museum, which is housed in the old Lorraine Motel, site of the assasination of Martin Luther Kinh Jr.  The museum is an amazing place, which deserves several hours of your time, we spent 2 hours there and only scratched the surface of what it had to offer and would have to return the next day to finish it off.

It is very heavy going though, so we were pleased when Brooks took us to Beale street, the party place in town.  Here he took us to a cool BBQ joint that had live blues performances as we filled ourselves with fine BBQ pork & chicken, cooked in the authentic Memphis style.  Damn good!!!!  We then hit Brooks' local bar for more beers before home and bed!

The next day Brooks took us for breakfast at the Arcade dinner which sits at the top of his road.  This was a hangout of Elvis back in his heyday, and we actually got to eat in his booth, situated by the back door so he could run out if the fans got too carried away!

This was the perfect start to the day as we were off to Graceland next!  The home of Elvis and his family was suprisingly small in size, but decorated in amazing 70's kitch extravagance!  I will let the pictures do the talking.

We also quickly swung by the Sun Studios building, where Sam Phillips recored the likes of Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins & Jerry Lee Lewis!

It was sad not to be able to spend more time with Brooks in a cool city, but we were off to Nashville the next day!
