Left San Francisco the morning of the 25th with light to nonexistent winds but NO fog. Motored most of the day until the wind picked up enough to sail. At this point we discovered that the revisions Eric had made to the windvane steering actually worked, and we were able to turn over the bulk of the work to "Otto" for the majority of the trip. He was amazing - no electricity, no complicated gadgets; just set and forget! Oh, we still had to watch the compass in case the wind shifted and we found ourselves going back the way we came. He was not too smart that way - just kept us at a constant angle to the wind. However, the winds were constant for the entire 2 days and 2 nights down to Point Conception, and Otto behaved beautifully. Even when we were surfing down 15 foot seas with 30 knots of wind, he just went about his business.

Needless to say (and as you can probably gather from the foregoing) we got bashed about a bit again on that leg. Cooking became a major challenge under those conditions (imagine trying to cook with your kitchen installed on a Tilt-a-Whirl), and Marilyn got a hero's badge (her second this trip) for her efforts in that regard.

Anyway, we made it and we're feeling quite proud of ourselves (although we kept reminding ourselves that pride cometh before the fall!) We moored at Ventura West Marina which was absolutely amazing! Individual slips, fully secured, huge shower and laundry facilities (with FREE showers - these things become important when you are cruising), a lounge and
small exercise room, and even a "guest" apartment that residents can rent if
they have guests who can't be accommodated on their boat!

Here we left the boat for 2 months, returning to Vancouver to work, while waiting out the Hurricane season before continuing our journey.
