We were feeling jumpy and almost put the boat in last Saturday but the travel lift (the mega-machine that moves boats into and out of the water) had some sort of malfunction while bringing the last boat before us out of the water.

The hiccup in our plans turned out for us to be an advantageous thing as we took care of a couple of things on the keel where water was entering slowly but surely and if left alone could one day cause some serious havoc.

The weather has stayed pretty much cold and rainy (as I write this it is hailing) so with the help of a couple of space heaters the fiberglass job that Tom did on the keel finally cured this morning. Tom added some bottom paint which dries quickly and by 3pm Hawkswood was on the travel lift and headed for water for the first time in over a year.

This evening we worked on the engine, changing the filter and the oil and finalized our game plan for tomorrw.

We are headed out first thing in the morning. It should be a pretty long day--we'll be covering about 60 miles, passing through some very congested areas of barge traffic and one lock (Lockport Lock and Dam). We'll be docking overnight in the town of Joliet.
