Now I don't know if this was the exact date I went there, but lets say it is.
North Head is found on North Shore, which is apparantly a suburb of Devonport, over the harbour bridge from Auckland. It was, or rather is, an old war fort that is also a volcanic cone. Before it was adapted and hacked at by the Military. Good hacking though, I don't want anyone to feel I'm being critical here.
There are lots of tunnels, a network, underneath the ground, and not all were lit, so the hands went first. It was quite an overcast day, but it was interesting to visit and the views of sky city/ Auckland were, it has to be said, rather impressive.
In 1878, it was turned into a public reserve. Now, if you had read my previous post thingy about North Head, before I came along and sorted the mess out, you would have heard me say 'an old war fort kind of place, with a massive cannon that can rotate and sink into its metal armour and into the ground' but, thanks to the wonderful creation that is the Internet, I can reveal to you that the massive cannon was in fact a 'BL 8 inch VII', which I personally think sounds much more adequet.
