Wednesday 18 March, 9.52pm, Quest Townsville

Welcome to Townsville, the most ridiculously-named place in Australia, according to Noj! Only it's more like farewell to Townsville, as I move on to Cairns in the morning. Let me catch you up on the last few days.

Steve, as it turned out, was not just a nice lad, but actually full on hilarious once you got to know him a bit (in my opinion, at least; he had that incredibly dry sense of humour that just slays me). Hung out with him and a German couple on Saturday night, and had a lot of fun taking the piss out of each other. We also watched that hideous Robin Williams thing, RV, which I was thoroughly dismayed to discover also stars Kristen Chenoweth, Jeff Daniels and Will Arnett. I guess the credit crunch is hitting everyone. We were initially trying to hide from our crazed roommate (I swear to God, the lunatics just flock towards me and embrace me as their queen), who I never once saw sober in the whole three days, but no such luck, because he soon followed us down. Fortunately, he passed out shortly after joining us in the TV room. We ignored him and had good natured arguments about Vegemite.

Mackay was a nice little town, a tad dull but lovely art deco buildings. I sort of ran out of patience with it though, it's got an awful lot of small tacky shops but not many pubs, restaurants or attractions to grab your attention. I found myself drifting towards the nearest cinema and somehow watching Shopaholic, which is basically my most damning indictment of a place. (Going to the flicks generally, not just watching that specific film. The film was good!)

From there I moved on to Townsville, coincidentally Steve's hometown. I really, really like it here. It's a bit small for me (I require at least one decent sized shopping centre), but the beaches are just beautiful, they have really gorgeous countryside nearby, including the Paluma Range National Park, where I spent the day yesterday, and a whole range of nice restaurants and bars. I approve of Townsville wholeheartedly.

I move on to Cairns tomorrow, and then I'll be home in less than a week. It's gone very fast, this time in Australia. I'll be glad to get home and re-evaluate what I'm doing and my life plans, but overall Australia is full of nice people, and I've enjoyed learning more about it. The one thing that's really getting me is that I am dying to know who'll win the election this weekend - I have seen or heard literally a thousand ads at least at this point of Labor and the LNP badmouthing each other. God alone knows what either of them stand for, because I haven't seen a single ad yet that isn't negative, but the LNP leader sounds a bit of a dork and the Labor leader is a woman, so I guess I support them?

Oh. The other thing that's inducing me to get home - I must have somewhere in the region of 70 bedbug bites now, I'm pretty sure they're living in my backpack. I can't wait to get home, I will spend a week in the steam room until every last little critter is no more.

Steamy steamy.....
Th esteam room is not just for bed bugs, it is for wine and gossip! I miss it so. And you, mostly you as the steam room would be completely rubbish on my own.
Burn you pack, with the pink trousers still inside and all the bed bugs will be gone forever.

Re: Steamy steamy.....
Why does everyone hate my pink trousers so much?? They're the most comfortable things I own and they keep me warm :( they are starting to get a bit knackered from overwashing now though. I will just have to buy another pair...

When I come home the first thing we will do is get a bottle of wine and go into the steam room and gossip for hours. We've got two months to catch up on. The pack can go in the sauna, we never go in there.

I will marry you off to a postman
But only if he looked good in a mourning suit, and only so I can start planning the wedding.

He he.
I do look forward to the steamy fun. And yes, leve the pack in the dry heat, it is too inferior for us gossip mongers.

Re: I will marry you off to a postman
MORNING suit, idiot. Or is it such an awful thing to marry me that he will be in mourning?

Lorna, I am ignoring you.

I envy you and your friends. Oh how I wish I had a steam room, a bottle of wine and friends to share it with.
