After the definite fail of yesterday's attempt at a health kick, decided I would stay away from exercise and have a meander around the zoo. Today has been by the far the hottest day so far that I've been here and I was slathering on the sunscreen like it was going out of fashion you'll be pleased to know!

Had a wander round Brunswick Street at the vintage shops and had a coffee before meeting Hayley to head off to the zoo. It turned out to be quite a challenge to find the tram and after some pointless traipsing up and down the CBD, finally worked it out and arrived at the zoo in the early afternoon.

The guy in the ticket booth caught me off guard when he asked, off the bat 'Where are you from?' and I said 'Scotland' and then he said in a broad Glaswegian accent 'Aye, I ken, but whereaboots?' And I laughed and said 'Glasgow' and he said 'Ahhhh, no you're no!' and I had to confess for the first time since arriving here that I grew up in Ayrshire which gave him a laugh! He was from Hamilton and has been living in Oz for over forty years! Incredible! More so that he sounded like he'd just tumbled out of a bar in The Barras mind you...

The heat forced many of the animals to take a nap but we did manage to see giraffes, tigers, zebras, a seal, elephants, a playtpus and a greenhouse full of butterflies which was amazing as they were flying freely and landing on people left, right and centre! Sadly the koalas weren't on display so I'm yet to see one but did get to see some of other Ozzie residents including wallabies, kangaroos and a very dozy looking emu!

One of the definite highlights were the monkeys, including gorillas and orang-tuans, the latter, I'd never seen before which was very exciting! I was amazed at how human they were, although it was a slightly worrying that they seemed rather sad! It was probably the heat, I was feeling a tad faint I must admit!

All in all a good day, and even got to encounter a fellow Scot. I have to say, although there were a couple of others at the hostel, I'm surprised by the lack of Scots here, I've been told they've all gone to New Zealand, somewhere I would like to go myself if I get the chance! In the meantime, I'm more than happy in Melbourne for the minute at least :)
