Where I stayed
The Inn at Blackberry Commons, 82 Elm Street, Camden, ME 04843
We had breakfast in the hotel. It was the usual fare: pastries (which I'm always allergic to), doughnuts (which I’m generally allergic to so best not to chance it), cereals (most of which I’m allergic to), yoghurts and fruit. I had a bowl of coca puffs (which taste very artificial compared to cocoa pops) and some tinned pineapple and mandarin segments. I decided to forego a cup of tea as there was no fresh boiling water, just a canister of boiled water (see my previous rant on American tea). Out of nowhere, two plates of bacon, scrambled eggs, pancakes, and whipped cream appeared on our table. I hadn’t been expecting this so hadn’t had an opportunity to mention my allergies, so I just had to guiltily ignore the plate of cooked breakfast in front of me.
We checked out and drove to Camden in Maine. According to all sources, the drive should only have taken two and a half hours. However, it was a gorgeously warm and sunny day (we drove with the roof down), and what with it being a bank holiday tomorrow, it seemed that everyone had taken to the roads. Four and a half hours after setting off, we finally arrived at our hotel, The Inn At Blackberry Commons. Another b&b, again it’s very sweet with a *lot* of parlours, posh coffee pod machine available for use, an 'honour bar’ (you help yourself and are expected to leave the right amount)… it also smells like blackberry as they make their own jam (and other foods) from their own vegetable garden! Even better, there were no flies in our room (!) which is bigger, lighter and smarter than the photo makes it appear: http://www.innsatblackberrycommon.com/RoomRate/RoomsRates.html#Monhegan.
We dumped our stuff and headed straight downtown (less than ten minutes’ walk away) to get food. It took a while to find a place as the first few restaurants we tried had stopped serving food between 2pm-5pm. We ended up in a pub called Cuzzys where David had decent ribs but my pork chops were sadly tasteless. We then walked along the small harbour-front and up and down the small but smart and bustling high street, and then decided to head back to the hotel so we could get in the car and drive up to Mount Battie in Camden Hills State Park.
We stayed up there for an hour or so, enjoying the beautiful views over Camden and the surrounding greenery (New England: tree-y), and watching the sunset start to come in. Knackered, we decided to have an easy evening in the hotel reading and doing internet stuff (our room doesn’t have TV!).
