We took a steady drive down the coast along the rugged coastal road until we reached the town of Monterey, we found our motel and managed to leave our cases there before heading down to Cannery Row, we thought it would be nice to hire bikes and cycle round the coast. In the end we settled for a tandem and headed off on the suggested route. It really was a beautiful ride although a little hilly in places, more fun on the way down! I think we notched up nearly 20 miles overall!! Once we got back we had a well earned ice cream but this was with a difference. The ice cream was frozen at -40 degrees into small balls and was served in a bowl, very unusual!! After that the sun had finally made an appearance so we took a drive down the coast with the roof off! We headed back to the motel and checked in before heading down to the Fisherman's Wharf for dinner. It was very similar to Pier 39 in San Francisco, with it's array of shops and restaurants, even it's own basking Sea Lions.

The following morning we drove around to Carmel, it is a small village with Clint Eastwood as the Mayor. We walked along the beach for a bit but the sea was freezing!! We headed up the hill into the town and found a Christmas shop so we had a look in before heading off once more. The coastal road became much more rugged as we drove through Big Sur park, with mountains rising up on one side of us and dramatic cliff edges down to the sea on the other, truly spectacular. We arrived at Big Sur and had lunch by the river, there were seats in the river so we sat there for a bit. We eventually headed back and decided to take a slightly different way back, on the map was a 12 mile old coastal road which we thought looked nice! It turned out to be a dirt track through the forests and nowhere near the coast at all! Probably not suitable for our little sporty car! We eventually got back and took a well earned rest chilling out by the pool and hot tub!
