Shekou isn't really only the kind of place you would visit if you had a reason to go there, consequently Shekou isn't a touristic place and the population is widely made up of Chinese and a lively Ex Pat community. It's clearly a very progressive area with extensive areas of reclaimed land, new high rises and large ports (I presume supporting the oil trade and inland industries).
Rex and Heather treated me to a whole host of things on offer in Shekou: a trek up a huge hill (which was stifling hot) to see the view's below, a great Chinese massage (will be getting more of those!), cycling around the city and absolutely fabulous food! In addition to that I also had the pleasure of seeing the AB's vs Fiji and the Lion's vs Maori and the local Irish pub... the atmosphere was complete with a Maori guy (Tony) from Whakatane doing the Haka following the victory against the Lions! I was impressed - it's hard to come by that kind of entertainment at home.... as you can probably tell Shekou isn't exactly rural China!
During one of our tasty Chinese meals out on the town the cook was literally making the noodles made by hand in front of us! I was blown away by his skill - perfectly shaped fresh spaghetti like noodles made over the course of about 45 seconds! I even took a video of the making which turned out to be a novelty for all of the staff at the restaurant.
To add alittle more interest into the visit Rex and Heather's apartment is in the heart of the red light district - a far cry from Quintals Road at home, but somewhat more fascinating! Bright light's sporting the statement 'I Love You' glowed in bright neon above one door... there seemed to be afew fat old white men making the most what love they could find! icky.
Unfortunately I am unable to attach any of my photo's from this computer... so will have to wait alittle longer for them sorry!
