Probably should have taken the high road (its supposed to be nicer), but took the quicker low road to Taos. It follows the Rio Grande gorge which was pretty sweet. There are a few photos from the drive posted. Got lunch at the famous Orlando's (great southwestern food) and then drove into the Wheeler Peak Wilderness northwest of Taos. Wheeler Peak is the highest point in New Mexico at 13,161'. Found a nice campsite at the Italianos Canyon trailhead, along the Rio Hondo, pretty close to the Taos Ski Valley at about 8,600'. Set up camp, gathered lots of good firewood and settled in for the night.
